Planning a trip to the UK in 2025? Whether you’re traveling for a holiday, transiting through, or embarking on a cruise adventure, it’s important to be aware of new changes to travel requirements for non-British and non-Irish passport holders.
From 2025, visitors or transit passengers may need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before traveling to the UK. This requirement applies to a wide range of travellers, including those coming for short stays or simply passing through.
Who Needs an ETA?
The ETA requirement applies to all non-British and non-Irish citizens who do not already require a visa for short stays in the UK or do not hold UK immigration status. This includes:
All EU and non-EU citizens, including children and infants under 18.
Dual citizens with British or Irish citizenship who travel on a passport other than their British or Irish one.
Who Does Not Need an ETA?
British or Irish passport holders.
Travellers with a valid certificate of entitlement to the right of abode in the UK.
Key Dates to Remember
Non-EU Nationals: ETAs are required for travel to the UK starting 8 January 2025. Applications can be submitted now.
Gulf Cooperation Council Nationals: ETA requirements are already in effect.
EU Nationals: Applications open on 5 March 2025, with ETAs mandatory for travel from 2 April 2025.
How to Apply for an ETA
Applying for an ETA is straightforward:
Visit the official UK ETA website or download the UK ETA app from Google Play or the Apple App Store.
Submit your application well in advance to avoid delays.
There is a fee for each application, and the ETA will be valid for two years or until your passport expires (whichever comes first).
Important Notes for Travellers
Once approved, travellers should carry proof of their ETA status (either as a printout or screenshot) throughout their journey.
Be prepared to present your ETA when asked by immigration authorities or airline staff.
Ensure your passport is valid for the duration of your trip and matches the details used in your ETA application.
Stay Updated
This information is based on UK government guidance as of 27 November 2024. Travellers should always check the UK government website for the latest updates before making travel arrangements.
By planning ahead and applying for your ETA in good time, you can ensure a smooth and stress-free start to your UK holiday or cruise. Bon voyage!
