Port Guide: Hellesylt, Norway

Hellesylt is a village in Stranda Municipality in Norway. The Sunnylvsfjorden, a branch of the Storfjorden, lies at the head of the village. Geirangerfjorden is nearby. The village has a population of 258 and a density of 586 inhabitants per square kilometre. There are hundreds more people in the surrounding valley area.

During summertime, thousands of tourists visit Hellesylt each day. Many take the ferry to nearby Geiranger village, which runs every one and a half hours during high season.

Hellesylt is under constant threat from the mountain Åkerneset, which is about to erode into the Sunnylvsfjord. A collapse could cause a tsunami destroying most of downtown Hellesylt.

Absorb the charm of this UNESCO World Heritage village as you wander towards its photogenic central waterfall or take a 30-minute bus ride through an epic valley landscape to nearby Stranda. There you'll discover even more contemporary Norwegian restaurants; stores packed with sleek Scandi designs; and vibrant bars where you'll rub shoulders with friendly locals.

Things to do

Hellesylt waterfall is one of the most visited waterfalls in the area. In the centre of the village, between two bridges (Høge bridge from 1907 and Hellesylt bridge from 1902) the water cascades down the granite stones. It is an impressive sight in the early summer during the snow thaw period. It is a short walk from the cruise port.

A small tourist village in Sunnmøre region of Møre og Romsdal county, Geiranger sits at the head of the Geirangerfjorden. It offers many activities including kayaking on the fjord, a trip to Mount Dalsnibba, the Geiranger Skywalk and lots more.
